What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have now become a common thing and there are number of people doing it today. Dental implants are effective and more natural-looking replacements for the missing teeth. Dental implants may be described as the best alternative to natural teeth today. This has changed the life of many people across the world.

A dental implant is nothing but a metallic object which is inserted into your jawbone to make it look like a natural tooth-root. The object integrates with the jawbone to give a firm support to the artificial tooth.

An implant may be required or suggested by the dentist if you have missing teeth. It may not be possible to give you a fixed bridge due to technical reasons like inadequate bone or tooth support. For people who are not comfortable with dentures, it may be a good choice to go for dental implants. The only disadvantage of dental implants is that there are surgical procedures involved to insert the implant into the jawbone. This also involves high cost as compared to dentures.

Process of Dental Implants:

The dentist will evaluate your mouth and check if the dental implant can be done on you. Then your dentist will gather information about your dental and medical history. He will then examine your mouth and take x-rays of tooth. After that, the dentist will discuss the results of the evaluation further which any action can be taken to decide whether you need an implant or not.

There are risks and complications which are involved in this like other surgical procedures. This may include bleeding or infection. Your dentist will discuss the risks which are specific to your implant. This could include problems such as sinus problems and numbness from nerve injuries. If the dental implant fails, it may be removed or redone. Otherwise, or you may have to wear dentures again.

If you turn out to be a good candidate for an implant, you can go ahead and do it. If you have enough jawbones which are dense enough to support an implant, you can do an implant. Also if your gums are healthy, you can do an implant. Apart from that, any medical conditions can also influence this decision of implant.

Taking Care of Artificial Teeth:

There are some simple steps which you can follow like routine cleaning of your artificial teeth. This can keep them healthy. Like natural teeth, you should also brush your implants after every meal. There are special brushes which can be used to clean behind and below the artificial replacements. Flossing around the implants is a must and you must do it. You will be able to eat most of the foods. However, you must avoid chewing ice, hard objects and sticky foods.

But remember, you need to go for routine checkups at least twice a year.
