Tooth filling or dental filling is mostly used for curing cavities. It can also be used in repairing a decayed or broken tooth. In this process dentist take out the worn out part of the tooth and fill the area with different dental filling materials like porcelain and silver amalgam.
Different steps in filling a tooth
- First and foremost, the dentist will apply anesthesia around the tooth to make it numb. After that a drill, laser or air abrasion instrument is used in removing the decayed part.
- Next, the dentist will test the area to see if all the decayed parts are been removed.
- Once this decayed parts are removed completely, space is been made for filling the cavity.
- In case if there is decay near the root, the dentist may use a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material to protect the nerve.
- At last, after the filling is in, the dentist will finish it and give it a polish.
Sometimes temporary fillings are also done when there is not much time. Though they can last for quite a long time, but it’s advisable to have a permanent and durable filling.

Today there are various filling materials available. Some of them are:
- Porcelain
- Silver amalgam or tooth -colored
- plastic and glass materials called composite resin fillings

The cost for a tooth filling depends on different types of factors like:
- How popular and well known the dentist is?
- The place and the location also play a major factor.
- What type of dental insurance one has. Dental insurance usually does not cover additional charges of composite fillings which are expensive than usual fillings.
- It also depends on number of tooth surfaces need to be filled.
