Bright and beautiful smile can give an extra glamour to anyone's look. Healthy teeth are always a key to a beautiful smile. But people often get discolored teeth due to many reasons. Lack of proper brushing is the most common cause. Taking excessive amount of tea, coffee, cola soft drinks, cigarette also cause the discoloration of the teeth. Stained teeth can be the signs of serious dental diseases. If you don't have any dental problem, you can go for the "teeth whitening". It is actually removing stains from the teeth and teeth get their original color. There are number of teeth whitening methods such as, chemical whitening, mild acid whitening, abrasive teeth whitening and laser teeth whitening.

Chemical whitening or bleaching: This process can be used to lighten up the stains from the teeth. It can be done in the dentist's chamber or at home. Dentists apply a particular gel to the teeth. Through a reaction it penetrates the enamel of the teeth and removes the deeply rooted stains. This process is very effective and demands one or two sittings. Chemical bleaching also can be done at home. In that case a tray containing mild whitening gel is used as per the dentists suggest. The process is time consuming.

Abrasive tooth whitening: Abrasive tooth whitening is another process, which acts on the surface of the teeth. Whitening toothpastes offer this type of whitening. All toothpaste contains some mild abrasives, but the whitening toothpastes have certain gentle chemicals, which provide extra cleaning. These toothpastes don't contain any bleaching agent.

Micro abrasion: It is a very mild scrubbing process in which a mild acid is applied over the teeth before using the abrasive paste to make the abrasion more effective.

Laser bleaching: It is the latest procedure for whitening the teeth. In this procedure a transparent gel is applied to the teeth followed by a laser beam. The crystals of the gel absorb energy from the laser beam and get activated. These activated crystals penetrate through the teeth enamel producing whitening effect quickly. This is the quickest process requiring only one sitting in the doctor's chamber.

Teeth whitening cannot keep the teeth white permanently. It lasts barely one or two years .The process therefore requires repetition at periodic intervals. To keep the teeth white for a long time, the followings are necessary:

Pregnant women, minors, people with sensitive teeth and having gum diseases should stay away from teeth whitening products. They don't work on crowns, veneer or exposed roots.

Lastly, keep in mind that you are using only those whitening products that are recommended by the doctors.
