Oral Hygiene Instructions

According to the studies conducted by American Dental Association (ADA), 98% of Americans face some dental problem or the other. Recent report released by ADA elucidates the main causes and proper solutions for massive growth of dental problems. Poor oral hygiene is the main cause followed by diet and various diseases. ADA extensively stresses more upon the importance of oral hygiene instructions. Now let us have a glance at the important instructions given by the dental association.

Oral Hygiene Instructions:

According to the dentists, if an individual maintains proper oral hygiene 70% of the dental problems get rectified. Below are a few oral hygiene instructions that one should follow:

Proper Brushing Technique:

  • Always use a soft bristle toothbrush
  • Use an anti-cavity fluoride toothpaste
  • Hold the brush at 45-degree angle to the gum line and brush in circular motion. This helps in sweeping any plaque formed in the gingival pockets
  • Brush at least twice a day, for a minimum of 2 minutes each time
  • Softly brush the gums along with the teeth
  • Scrapping the tongue will get rid of some bacteria
  • Brushing too hard can cause gum recession so, be gentle in what you do

Proper Flossing Technique:

Flossing removes plaque efficiently by cleaning the areas which might miss while brushing. Flossing will prevent periodontal disease to a maximum extent by removing tartar and plaque. Here’s how to floss perfectly:

  • Use an eighteen inches length floss and wrap around your fingers, mostly on one side
  • Form a shape with the floss around each tooth and clean it
  • To clean each gingival (gum) pocket, use a new area of the floss
  • Make sure that you floss behind the last molars

Oral Disease Prevention:

Most of the oral diseases can be prevented by practicing the following

  • Brushing and flossing
  • Using a fluoride rinse after eating anything especially, after eating sugar food
  • Using herbal paste is more preferred than fluoride toothpaste
  • Reduce carbohydrate intakes
  • Reduce acidic fruits like oranges and tomatoes (instead drink juices)
  • Visit a dentist twice every year for professional cleaning
