Although it is partly a matter of luck and partly genetics, there is a lot you can achieve by nurturing your teeth well and working towards overall improvement of your oral health. Here are some basic, but important dental care tips which form the first steps towards sporting a beautiful smile.

Remove plaque regularly:

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that keeps forming inside your mouth. if it is allowed to remain on the surface of your teeth for more than 24 hours, it organizes into colonies and starts producing harmful enzymes. The key to keeping teeth and gums healthy is plaque removal.  The best way to remove plaque is, of course, brushing teeth regularly. However, excessive brushing erodes your teeth, causing a breakdown of the entire periodontal structure and is a sure-fire path to formation of crowns.

Use a good toothbrush:

Use a soft bristled brush, preferably one with rounded, synthetic bristles. Look for the American Dental Association seal of approval. An old toothbrush may succeed in ridding your teeth off plaque, but if the bristles are rough – which they will be before long, you will be causing more damage than good.

Visit your dentist:

Make it a point to visit your dentist at least once in six months and get your teeth cleaned professionally to keep the tartar (plaque build-up) from accumulating.

Watch your diet:

Diet is of chief importance and yes, sugar is an enemy to your teeth. Sugar attracts plaque to teeth so if you do indulge, wash your mouth afterwards. Besides a healthy diet, eat foods that require enough chewing. Teeth need exercise too! More importantly, chewing generates saliva, which restores calcium lost due to plaque.
