Tooth Dry Socket

Tooth dry socket is a result of failed tooth extraction process and is experienced by only 2% to 5 % of people. A socket is a hole in the bone where the tooth has been removed. Once a tooth is extracted from the jaw there is a formation of blood clot at that site which acts as protective layer or shield for the bone and nerves underneath. This clot even forms the foundation for the growth of new bone and tissue development over the clot.

Tooth-DryTooth Dry Socket Occurs Due to the Following Reasons:

  • Improper formation of blood clot after tooth extraction.
  • Dissolving of clot before healing at the site of extracted tooth.
  • Clot getting physically dislodged before healing the site.
  • Extracted tooth’s root space is not covered with new tissue.
  • Bone and nerves in the socket getting exposed to fluid, air and food.

As per the latest researches going on to know the exact cause for this, few issues have been revealed which are involved in dry socket formation, namely:

  • Bacterial contamination of socket.
  • Bone and tissue damage while surgical extraction of tooth.
  • Presence of any small fragment of root or bone after tooth extraction.
