Women and Gum Diseases

Being a woman means your health needs unique and important attention. There are specific time periods in women’s life when they have to take extra care. During these specific time such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause etc women become prone to many health problems. Women and gum diseases are part of such phase itself. As per the reports in Journal of PeriodontologyĀ¯ 23% of women in the age group of 30 to 54 years have periodontal disease (gum disease) and 44% of women in the age group of 55 to 70 years have periodontitis.

  1. Puberty:

    During this phase there is an increase of sex hormone called progesterone and estrogen which causes high blood circulation to the gums. Due to this increase, the gums become sensitive and prone to reaction for any irritation and plaque formation. The gum becomes swollen and tender.

  2. Menstruation:

    Some women experience gum problems during menstruation and it is called as menstruation gingivitis. This occurs just before the period and clears up once the period starts. During this time there is bleeding gums, red and swollen gums and sores inside cheeks.

  3. Pregnancy:

    Women and gum diseases are related with each other at the highest level during the second or third month of pregnancy. This increases in severity till the eighth month and women will notice swelling and redness of gums along with tenderness of tissues. As per the research it’s even seen that women with gum diseases gives premature birth and low weight babies. So it is always advisable to follow a dental check up before going for pregnancy.

  4. Menopause:

    Women at this phase experiences dry mouth, discomfort in mouth, pain and burning feeling in gum tissues which even alter the taste of food.

Following a good healthy diet with all nutrition value during the above phases and following a regular dental hygiene program is the best way to keep yourself safe and healthy.
