Certain tips for healthy mouth during chemotherapy should be followed during the sessions to prevent certain complications. These side effects can cut short the treatment or even stop it at the middle of the session.

What are the Chemotherapy Effects?

  • Painful gums.
  • Difficulty in chewing.
  • Sour taste while eating any food products.
  • Peeling tongue.
  • Dryness in mouth.
  • Pain in entire mouth and throat area.
  • Burning and swelling of tongue.

These effects depend on the type of therapy provided or type of cancer the person is suffering from. How the body reacts to the drugs being used is also one of the major factors.

Moistening of mouth:

  • Keep chips of ice in mouth.
  • Keep drinking lot of water.
  • Consuming sugar free gums and candy.
  • Keeping saliva inside mouth to maintain the moisture.

Cleaning of gums, mouth and tongue :

  • Use of soft tooth brush for proper cleaning of gums, teeth and tongue. Brushing to be done twice or thrice a day.
  • Use of warm water and salt for rinsing of mouth and gargling.
  • Fluoride base toothpaste to be used.
  • Flossing of teeth and gums gently everyday. In case of bleeding gum or soreness, avoid those areas which are bleeding.
  • Put one fourth spoon of baking soda in water along with salt and keep rinsing your mouth several time a day.
  • Discuss about the braces being used during therapy session. If braces are not required or can be avoided, then avoid their use.

Proper diet in case mouth is sore :

  • Choose food items which are soft and less spicy.
  • Try to consume liquid diet more than the hard diet.
  • Eat small portion and bites of food to make the chewing comfortable.
  • Yogurt and other liquids can be used to make swallowing smooth and easy.

Avoid unhealthy food :

  • Food like candy, soda, ice creams etc which can cause cavity should be avoided.
  • Crunchy or sharp food products like chips or other fried item should be avoided as they may cause cut in mouth.
  • No smoking or chewing tobacco.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks.
  • High acid and citrus base products should be limited or avoided for consumption.
