The tooth infection symptoms may vary depending on the site of the tooth and depth of the infection on the tooth. In this article, there is a brief discussion on the symptoms of tooth infection.

Symptoms of tooth infection

The tooth infection symptoms may vary from one patient to the other. But, there are some symptoms which are common among all patients which are as follows.

  • Toothache:

    It is the most common symptom of infection of the tooth. The pain can be continuous and severe in some individuals. Some individuals may have throbbing or gnawing pain, while others may have shooting or sharp pain.

  • Sensitivity to cold or hot foods:

    Individuals who have infectious teeth may develop tooth sensitivity to cold or hot fluids and solids.

  • Pain and discomfort when chewing:

    Patients with tooth infection may have discomfort and pain when chewing food.

  • Bitter taste inside the mouth:

    Tooth infection is a result of bacterial infection which attacks and destroy the tooth outer and inner tissues. Thus, the infectious condition causes bitter taste inside the mouth.

  • Breath odour:

    Patients may also experience bitter taste due to the above condition, where the bacteria attacks the tooth tissues and destroys them causing bad breath.

  • Fever:

    Severe pain can lead to possible fever. It is possible that when pain increase, the body increases its temperature resulting in fever.

  • Swollen glands of the neck:

    The tooth infection can spread to the inner tissues, then to the nerves and later to the glands of the neck, which causes swelling. Thus, results in swollen glands.

  • Swollen area of the lower jaw or upper jaw:

    This is a very serious sign and symptom. When the tooth infection becomes severe and when it spreads to the surrounding areas, the area becomes swollen.

  • Uneasiness or ill feeling:

    Some individuals may have ill feeling or uneasiness due to the infectious condition.
