A dry socket treatment is mainly geared to reduce its symptoms, particularly the trauma. The treatment for the infectious condition dry socket formed after the tooth extraction is as follows.

  • Flushing out a dry socket:

    The oral surgeon or the dentist flushes out the dry socket to remove the debris, food residue or other stuck particles which have been collected inside the socket and which might contribute to trauma and other infections and complications.

  • Medicated dressings:

    The oral surgeon or the dentist packs the dry socket with the medicated dressings. This medicated dressings provide relatively faster pain relief. The patient needs to change these dressings several times frequently after the treatment begins. The severity or the condition of a dry socket determines how often the patient needs to change the dressing or require other treatments.

  • Pain medication:

    During the treatment process, talk to your dentist or the oral surgeon about which pain relieving medicines are the best for you condition. If the over-the-counter medicines for pain relieving are not effective then you may require a stronger prescription pain relievers.

  • Self-care:

    Your dentist will instruct you on how to flush a dry socket at home in order to eliminate the debris and promote healing. For this process, you will be given a dental product (which includes a plastic syringe which has a curved tip) that is used to squirt salt water, water or the prescription rinse in the socket. Patients would be instructed to continue the process of rinsing until the dry socket will no longer collects any food residue or any debris.
