  1. First thing after the tooth extraction is to gently press against the extraction to reduce bleeding. After the tooth extraction a gauze or a cotton ball is placed over the extracted area. You need to put pressure on the area gently to reduce bleeding. This helps in blood clot formation. Change the gauze with a new piece when it is saturated.
  2. Later, sit still for a time period before you could move and be sure that the blood clot is formed. Because a disturbance to the clot formation can provoke bleeding.
  3. At this stage, a blood clot is formed which is essential for the healing process. To prevent the dislodging of blood clot, you need avoid drinking fluids or rinsing your mouth for a time period of a few hours.
  4. For the first 24 hours, you need have only fluids or very soft foods such as soups, mashed potatoes and yogurt which do not require any chewing. After 24 hours, include soft foods and even for slight chewing use the other unaffected side. Take extra care while eating foods. It is better to avoid crunchy and hard foods for a time period recommended by your dentist.
  5. The tooth extraction can cause pain, that can make you to avoid touching the area. But, it is very important that you make sure to keep the extracted area clean to prevent infections of the affected area and other complications.
  6. You might be having a feeling to rinse you mouth just after the tooth extraction. But, it is very important that you avoid rinsing your mouth for the first twenty-four hours. Rinsing can be done only after twenty-four hours with a warm salt water solution following your dentists instructions.
  7. Your dentist will prescribe some antibiotics and pain relieving medications to prevent the infection and to ease the pain. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel some pain. You can take prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics.
  8. During this period, it is also important that you take enough rest and avoid straining yourself. As physical activity can cause also bleeding. Avoid disturbing the extracted tooth area.
  9. Maintain a proper oral hygiene by regularly brushing your tongue and teeth, you must also clean the extracted area as per your dentists instructions.
  10. There might a slight bleeding till the first 24 hours, but, if you experience bleeding after 24 to 48 hours then immediately consult your dentist to get medical attention.
  11. If you experience thick bleeding with dark red blood spots then apply more pressure on the affected bleeding area. Repeat the process of placing the gauze over the affected area and gently putting pressure against it for about 40 to 45 minutes. If this is not helps in the proper blood clot formation then immediately consult your dentist.
