How to Brush Your Teeth While Wearing braces

Some might need to wear orthodontic braces so they need to brush their teeth more properly as to remove the stuck food and debris in braces. To maintain good dental and oral health you need to properly brush your teeth while wearing braces. In this article,there is a brief discussion on the step to brush the teeth properly while wearing braces.

Steps on how to brush your teeth while wearing braces

  1. Use fluoride containing toothpaste that is approved by the American Dental Association or recommended by the dentist to brush your teeth. Don’t use tooth whitening toothpaste.
  2. Brush your teeth just within few minutes after completing each meal and also right before going to bed. Brushing helps to remove the food residue and thus avoids staining of the braces on the teeth and as the staining might not be obvious till the braces are removed.
  3. Place the toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees and then brush the teeth by moving it in back and forth with a gentle and short strokes. As teeth are in 3D appearance you need to brush front, top and back of each tooth. In addition, brush you gums, roof of the mouth and tongue.
  4. Be careful when you brush around the braces. Brush gently from the top and then brush down as to avoid snapping or bending of brackets and wires.
  5. Floss slightly with waxed floss and always use the standard flossing technique. Prior to the flossing remove the rubber bands. Floss between the braces and wire and between the teeth. Tugging the floss loosely can bend loosen, bend or break the braces. Any broken piece of the floss left behind could introduce bacteria that increases the risk of gum diseases and cavities.
  6. For every 3 months replace your toothbrush or when the bristles are worn out. One need replace their toothbrush with a new one after recovering from cold as germs could reside in the bristles and cause infections again.

The above steps helps to properly brush your teeth while wearing braces. Follow these steps along with your dentist advice to avoid staining on the teeth from braces and also to prevent gum and oral diseases.
