Tips to Get Rid of Cold Sores on the Tongue

Nursing-CariesCold sores are technically referred to as canker sores. They are lesions or sores present on the different areas inside the mouth. Cold sores on the tongue are the sores present on the tongue, but they can also occur on the inner side of the lips towards the front teeth or on the lips or inside of the cheeks. The cold sores on the tongue can make it difficult to talk, eat or swallow. They often disappear after 2 to 3 weeks without any treatment. But, you can take some measures to get rid of the sores faster.

Tips to get rid of cold sores on the tongue

  1. Use over-the-counter medicated paste for the canker sore and smear it on the sore on the tongue as soon as you experience or notice it. This paste contains active ingredients such as fluocinonide and triamcinolone acetonide, as they help to numb the pain and heal the lesion or sore.
  2. Consult your doctor and ask him to prescribe a tetracycline or dexamethasone mouth rinse. Because tetracycline is an antibiotic which helps to destroy bacterial growth inside the sore and aids in faster healing, while dexamethasone helps in reducing the inflammation of the tongue.
  3. Consult your doctor and buy over-the-counter medications containing Debacterol, which is a chemical-based cauterizing ointment. Application of this ointment instantly helps to seal the cold sore and also helps reduce the bleeding and pain.
  4. If you are suffering with recurrent cold sores on the tongue then discuss with your doctor or dentist about the treatment options. There are many prescription solutions or ointments which help to cure recurrent cold sores. Examples of these prescriptions include acyclovir and valacyclovir, that could be used to speed up the healing process and to reduce the outbreaks which occur regularly in some individuals.
  5. Change your diet and lifestyle. Use of certain product and vitamin deficiencies can provoke cold sores. Essential supplementation including vitamin B, folic acid and zinc can help to cure recurrent cold sores. Along with this, avoid toothpastes which contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate), as they can irritate the soft tissues inside your mouth and can even cause small cuts which turn out into lesions or sores.

The above listed are some of the tips to get rid of cold sores on the tongue. If you have any further problem take guidance and prescription from your doctor and follow the prescription carefully.
