Dental Teeth Cleaning Tools and Their Uses

Nursing-CariesDentists usually use many different kinds of tools and equipments to clean patients teeth and in the whole treatment. Most of these handheld tools are generally used on specific areas or part of the teeth for certain cleaning strokes. Each tool is specific for its use in the dental teeth cleaning procedures. Let us examine the dental teeth cleaning tools and their uses which are discussed in this article.

Types of dental teeth cleaning equipments

There are many different types of tools and equipments for the dental teeth cleaning. These dental teeth cleaning tools are listed below.

  • Scalers and curettes
  • Markers and probes
  • Hoes and files
  • Scalpels
  • knives
  • Several different styles and types of chisels
  • Ultrasound dental units
  • Autoclave

All these above tools are used for their specific functions in the dental teeth cleaning procedures. An ultrasound dental autoclaves and units are commonly used as adjuncts for handhelding the tools and instruments in the dental practices.

Uses of dental teeth cleaning

The use of the tools, equipments or instruments by the dentist depends on the patient’s teeth conditions (the size and presence of the stains, calculus or tartar on the tooth).

  • Periodontal hoe:

This is commonly used for the removal of debris from the larger tooth packets.

  • Curette:

It is used to remove the debris from the smaller pockets. It also helps to the remove the calculus from the root surfaces and then a file planes the tooth area smooth.

  • Scalers:

This helps to remove the stains from the surface of the tooth crown.

  • Chisels and hoes:

They help to remove larger amounts of tartar and calculus from the surface of the tooth.

  • Probes and markers:

They are used to define the tooth depth of the under lying tissue pockets like soft tissue pockets or/and even below the gum line (subgingival bone loss) in the dentistry.

  • Periodontal scalpels and knives:

Dentists routinely uses these periodontal scalpels and knives with the push-pull stroke during deep cleaning of the root to incise gingival tissue.

  • Ultrasound dental unit:

This uses sound waves which are operating at about 25,000 cycles per one second to generate or produce energy which travels down to the shank to the detachable head (that is usually a hoe head or scaler). Thus, when the instrument vibrates, stains and calculus get separated from the surface of the tooth while a mist of an aerosol helps to cool the tooth surfaces.

  • Autoclave:

Most dental offices or clinics use an autoclave, a self-locking apparatus to sterilize all the dental instruments. It works under steam pressure that kills the microorganisms which might enter into the patient’s mouth and cause an infection.

Dentists usually uses pull strokes with all these instruments. Instruments used for the treatment of periodontal disease involves both the teeth and gum diseases. It usually consists of a thin, long shank with 1 or 2 angle heads which have very specific type of uses.

Features of dental teeth cleaning tools

Toot cleaning instruments are generally made up of stainless steel. This gives them more longevity and durability. While the shanks of the instruments are mostly similar, but they may have 1 or 2 heads with different capabilities and structures.

  • Scalers:

They have U-shaped pointed blades on each side and might be either double-ended or single-ended.

  • Curettes:

They have 2 sharp angular blades present on both ends of an instrument.

  • Periodontal hoe:

They have a blunted, thicker and L-shaped blade with a smaller hook sometimes on one end.

  • Files:

They generally have a series or alignment of short, small blades which are angling just away from an instrument.

  • Chisels:

They might have a flat, pointed, angled end or a rectangular head.

  • Dental knives:

They have extremely sharper, cup-shaped blades either on both the shank ends or on a single shank end.

  • Disposable dental knives:

They consists of small curved blade which is fastened to the handle.

Future of dentistry

The future of the dentistry is going in a digital way.

  • Many of the practices are currently using the digital radiographs and a group called Gerson-Lehrmann group is working currently on the 3D imaging program on the human jaw and skull.
  • Gene therapy and tissue engineering methods to replace the gum tissue and diseased tooth are being developed.
  • Along with this, many modern restorative materials and hand instruments with high-speed are being developed.

The above article discusses all about the dental teeth cleaning tools and their uses. Along with this, there is brief discussion on the features of dental instruments and future of the dentistry.
