Tips for Proper Brushing

Tips for proper brushing

  • Brush your teeth twice daily:

    Every individual must brush their teeth twice in a day, once before going to bed. Brushing your teeth before going to bed is very important as when you fall asleep, your mouth gets dry which makes it easy for the acids produced by the bacteria to attack the teeth. Brushing in the morning before or after breakfast is important as it helps to remove stuck food residue and get rid of plaque which has built up overnight.

  • Brush not more than thrice in a day:

    Brushing helps to remove stuck food residue and helps to get rid of bacteria and plaque formation. But, brushing too often will damage the gums and cause irritation.

  • Brush lightly:

    You should not brush too hard as it can cause damage to the gums by causing gum recession (gums move away from teeth). Plaque attaches tightly to the teeth brushing too hard cause damage to the gums. Hold your brush tightly as this encourages for a lighter stroke and brush to remove plaque and tartar or calculus.

  • Brush for at least 3 minutes:

    This is the minimum time for brushing all your teeth. Set a timer as it acts as good reminder and brush your teeth thoroughly.

  • Follow the correct brushing procedure or technique:

    Consult your dentist and ask him to show the proper brushing technique.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush:

    The harder toothbrush can cause damage to your gums and very soft toothbrush will not able to remove plaque formation or tartar.

  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months:

    Regularly change your old toothbrush with a new soft-bristled toothbrush when the bristles flare or after every 3 months. Suppose if your toothbrush bristles flare up even before 3 months, it means that you’re brushing too hard, so try to ease up.

  • Be gentle while brushing:

    Gently brush your teeth and tongue to eradicate the bacteria that cause dental and oral problems.

  • Hold toothbrush at 45° angle:

    Brush by holding you toothbrush at an angle of 45° against your teeth and gun line. Gently brush each tooth properly from one end to the other side on the outer and inner surface of the upper and lower teeth.

  • Use tip bristles to brush pits and cervices:

    Chewing areas are more likely to develop cavities. So, make sure that you clean your chewing areas of the teeth with short sweeping strokes by using the tip of your tooth brush bristles.

  • Hold your toothbrush in vertical position:

    To clean inner surface of the teeth and and gums, hold your toothbrush in vertical position. Brush gently with front and back motions.
