Causes of Mouth Ulcers

Tooth-DryMouth ulcers develop in the mouth as an open sore or break in the membrane of the mucosal lining. They may occur on the inside of the lips, inside of the cheeks, etc. The causes of mouth ulcers are discussed below in this article.

Causes of mouth ulcers

  • Minor physical injuries:

    The common cause mouth ulcers is the trauma to the mouth. It can be a result of accidental biting, cut due to the sharp, abrasive or crooked edge of the tooth, excess salty food, dental braces, poor dentures fittings, trauma or a injury from a toothbrush. They injure the lining of the mucosal layer of the mouth, leading in an ulcer.

  • Chemical injuries:

    Some of the chemicals such as alcohol or aspirin that come in contact or held within the oral mucosa can cause the mucosal tissues to slough off or to become necrotic causing an ulcerated surface. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), is one of the ingredient which causes increase mouth ulcers and is used as a main ingredient in toothpastes.

  • Smoking Cessation:

    Just in a week of smoking cessation, smokers are more likely to develop multiple ulcers. The duration among the smoking individuals varies and it can range even from a month to several years. Some reduction supplements includes oral nicotine which has shown decrease development of ulcers.

  • Infection:

    One can also experience mouth ulcers due to the bacterial, fungal and viral processing. When a person has a cut in the mouth, if he/she touches the cut or wound without wash their hands, then he/she may develop mouth ulcer. As microorganisms from the hands enter the wound, they reproduce within and cause ulcers.

  • Allergies:

    Few people may also have allergies to certain things, which can lead to ulceration. For example, when a person has allergy with a compound such as amalgam then it can result in the mucosal ulceration.

These are a few causes of mouth ulcers, so make sure to take a little extra care to prevent them.
