Why is Oral Hygiene Important

  • Prevents oral cancer:

During the regular dental checkups and dental cleanings by the dentist, one can know the health condition of the teeth and also the oral cancer if present. Thus, it can be curable if it is diagnosed early.

  • Prevents gum diseases:

Gum or periodontal disease is an infection, which is caused to the bones and gum tissues that support the teeth. It is the major cause of the tooth loss in adults. The condition can be treated and even reversed, if diagnosed early.

  • Prevents plaque, tartar or calculus:

Good oral hygiene helps to prevent the bacterial growth. These bacteria grow and multiply to form a thin tissue called plaque, which contain different types of bacteria. Later, the plaque hardens and forms tartar or calculus. These cause the formation of the gum or periodontal disease. Thus, regular brushing, flossing and dental cleanings helps to prevent the formation of plaque, tartar and calculus.

  • Prevents tooth decay:

Tooth decay is caused by the bacteria. The bacteria present in the mouth form plaque and attack on the sugars from the stuck food particles and excrete acid. The acid damages the tooth enamel and destroys the tissues which lead to cavities, ultimately to the tooth loss.

  • Maintains overall health:

Recent studies has shown that there is a link between the heart strokes and attacks with gum disease. So good oral hygiene also helps to maintain the overall health.

  • Prevents bad breath and bad taste in the mouth:

This is caused due to the bacterial growth, as they excrete lactic acid while consuming sugars from the food. Thus, good oral hygiene helps to avoid the bacterial growth, which prevents bad breath and bad taste.
