What are the Treatments for Gum Diseases?

Treatments for gum diseases vary from patient to patient, as per the disease condition, infection rate, and the type. Thus, the gum disease treatment can be well explained by the dentist. So, if you develop any of the symptoms which show the disease condition then consult a dentist.

Treatments for Gum Diseases

Some of the common treatments which are used by the dentist for the treatment of gum diseases are listed below:

  • Scaling and/or root planning:

In this procedure, dentists use the deep-cleaning measures. It involves scrapping and removing tartar and plaque from the teeth and gums (from below and above the gum line).

  • Medication:

Doctors may use medications along with scaling and root planning for the prevention of infection in the mouth. It helps to stop and reduce the inflammation and infection of the disease condition.

  • Antibiotics:

These are given along with other medications to fight against the bacteria and to kill them which are responsible for the disease condition. They also help to reduce the infection and inflammation. Antibiotics are available in varied forms like medicated gels, fibers which need to be placed in the gum pockets, and medicated mouthwashes. These products help to heal the wounds by killing the bacteria. These should be taken only if your doctor prescribes them to you.

  • Surgery:

It is usually needed if the disease condition becomes severe and if the gum pockets are filled with bacteria. Dentists usually have a clean look at the condition, then he/she opens and cleans the gum pockets which are badly diseased, then stitches the gums back in such a way that the teeth comfortably fit in.

  • Gingivital grafting:

If the gum disease condition is too severe then the dentist uses gingivital grafting. In this process, the doctor removes the diseased tissues and replaces them with the healthy tissue from the other gum parts of the mouth and stitches them back into the place. Thus, grafting helps to improve the appearance and anchor the teeth.

It is important to make a note that one needs to take special care of the teeth during the treatment for the long lasting improvement. It includes brushing and flossing using proper technique, use of a soft, polished, bristled tooth brush, and quitting bad habits like using tobacco products and eating sugary foods.
