Sedation Dentist -How to Choose a Sedation Dentist

Sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to the usage to sedatives during dental procedures. A specialist who is expert in giving anesthesia during dental treatment procedures to put patients into a relaxed state is known as a sedation dentist.

Many patients undergoing dental treatments have phobias, fears or have difficulty in controlling their involuntary movements during the treatments. Depending on the procedure and need, various degrees of sedation are given by a sedation dentist. Some sedations are meant simply to alleviate anxiety in patients and put them in a sleep-like state so that they do not feel or remember the dentistry procedure.

There are some points to keep in mind before taking up sedation. Definitely a sedation dentist knows better as what sedations techniques suits you best. But before choosing a sedation dentist you have to keep certain things in mind. Discuss following things with a sedation dentist:

  • Is the dentist experienced enough to give the sedation? Take the details. What is his qualification and is he affiliated with any local dental clinics?
  • What type of people this sedation dentist treat routinely? If he practices on some other kind of patients then you may need to look for another dentist.
  • Inquire: What are the types of sedations offered by the dentist. Definitely they should not be “one size-fits-all” sedation and they are not interchangeable either.
  • Does this specialist have partnerships with dental specialists such as periodontists, prosthodontists and endodontists? This assures that all your needs are addressed.
  • Check if he can give you the correct sedation and yet can complete the procedures in minimum number of appointments.
  • If you are consulting for child, check out whether this dentist is a reputed pediatric sedation dentist. Other things are same as above.
  • Ask him if he can work with your insurance plan.
  • If you are traveling a significant distance to see this sedation dentist, be sure to ask about how long you will be sedated. Ask whether you need to arrange for any help while traveling back to home.
