What are Dental Sealants? – Why do we Need Them?

Dental sealants are one of the greatest advancements in modern chemistry. They are used to seal the cavity areas of the teeth. They are used in both adults and children. Let’s look in to the details of dental sealants.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealant is a clear, protective and safe coating applied to the teeth, on the biting surfaces. Sealant acts as a shielding against plague and bacteria, thus protecting the tooth from cavity. Before applying the dental sealant, the dentist cleans the teeth and the gums thoroughly. Dental sealing is a painless process. Extremely effective non-toxic dental sealants are recommended by the American Dental Association. Usually a dental sealant lasts up to ten years in adults. It is a very easy process with no side effects.

Why do we need Dental Sealants?

To clean off the bacteria and plaque, regular brushing and frequent flushing of tooth with water can be used. While brushing, we are able to see only the front and some of the side teeth. Back teeth are commonly vulnerable to cavity, as they are not clearly visible for cleaning properly. They contain small grooves and pits which cannot be cleaned by normal brushing. Bacteria builds up and feeds on the debris of the food. Bacteria form acids that destroy the tooth enamel, causing cavities.

Cost of Dental Sealant

Dental sealants are not free, they are applied at a cost of $30 – $50 per teeth. Usually the dental sealing for adults are not covered by your insurance, and if they do, then it is better to get a approval before the treatment.
