What are the Different Techniques in Tooth Decay Treatment?

According to the American dental association, tooth decay is the sixth major problem in the United States. It is very important to take treatment as early as possible to avoid serious damage to your teeth. Treatment is mainly based on the severity of the decay.

Different Techniques in Tooth Decay Treatment

When you visit a dentist for a tooth decay treatment, he would diagnose the problem and its severity. There are various tooth decay treatments available based on the damage caused. They are:

Fluoride Treatment

In the initial stages of tooth decay, fluoride treatment can do a great job. Fluoride prevents cavities by helping the teeth to repair themselves. In the professional fluoride treatment, dentist will apply a gel or liquid or foam with high fluoride concentration on the affected tooth. In some cases, a paste rich in fluoride is prepared and applied as a layer on the teeth. These treatments can be repeated several times as advised by your dentist.

Fillings

If the decay has spread deeper than the tooth’s enamel, then dental filling is required. During this procedure, the affected portion of the tooth is removed and filled with some filling material to restore the shape of the tooth. Composite resins, gold, silver amalgam and ceramic are few of the filling materials commonly used.

Crowns

If the decay has caused extensive damage to the tooth, then doing several fillings can weaken the tooth. In these cases, crowns are preferred. During the procedure, the decayed area is treated or removed and a crown is placed over the remaining teeth to protect from future damage.

Tooth Extraction

In few cases, the whole tooth gets damaged due to decays. In such cases, the dentist may prefer tooth extraction, as the decaying might spread to the surrounding teeth and gums. During the procedure, the heavily damaged tooth will be extracted and an implant or a bridge is placed to cover the gap.
