Periodontal Disease – Stages, Home Treatment

According to the American Dental Association, periodontol disease can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and worsen type 2 diabetes. If the disease is found in its early stages, there are many home treatments available to reverse the effects. Vitamins C and D, different types of toothpaste, herbal packs and gum massages are some of the treatments possible.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

All gum diseases start with the formation of plaque on teeth, it contains bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Unremoved plaque turns hard and forms tartar. Tartar produces toxins causing chronic gum inflammation, or simply called gingivitis.
Gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, where the teeth bones get irritated and damaged. After a while it can result in bone loss or loose teeth.

Periodontal Home Treatment

Depending on the stages mentioned above the treatment varies.

  • Stop smoking. Smoking causes many gum diseases and it neutralizes any treatment taken.
  • Reduce drinking, as it is also a major factor for gum disease.
  • Soft bristle toothbrush is recommended for brushing, and brushing after every meal is important.
  • Flossing atleast for 2 times a day is preferred. Toothbrush cannot reach the places where floss can, this will remove most of the plaque.
  • Drinking cranberry juice prevents the bacteria from sticking to the teeth, thus reduces plaque build-up.
  • A nutritious diet high in vitamins C and D can heal periodontol disease.
  • Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant which helps in regenerating bones and vitamin D is anti-inflammatory.
  • Spending 10 minutes per day in sunshine will increase the levels of vitamin D.
  • Kiwi fruit yellow and green, grapefruit, mango, corn, carrots, avocado and papaya are some of the best examples for vitamin C food
  • Fish, liver and diary products are generally high in vitamin D.
  • Herbal packs with different mixtures of Aloe, powered alum, willow bark, licorice root and turmeric can be used for good results. To get the exact mixtures and proportion, visit a herbalist.
