Partial Denture

A partial denture is a detachable appliance used in dentistry to restore multiple missing teeth. It is very important to replace a missing tooth. This is because when a tooth is missing, the remaining ones can change positions, moving into the surrounding space.
Missing teeth or teeth out of position can make it very difficult for a person to brush, chew on food etc. The persons speech is also affected.
A partial denture fills up the space created by the missing tooth thus preventing a loose droopy face by acting as a support to the lips and the cheeks.

Types of partial dentures

A partial denture is best used when a person has lost a few teeth and not all. Partial dentures are of two types. They are:

  • Removable partial denture
  • Fixed partial denture

Fixed Partial Dentures

The other name given to fixed partial dentures is dental implant bridges. In this, the artificial teeth are permanently attached to the jaw through a dental implant bridge. The bridges have a natural look and hence are much more preferred over removable types. They have a high comfort level too. The only disadvantage is that Fixed Partial Dentures are more expensive and can be used to replace a few teeth that are missing.

Removable Partial Dentures

As the sub-title states, this type of dentures are detachable. They can be placed back when ever desired.

The different types of removable partial dentures are:

Flipper Partial Denture

These dentures are made up of acrylic, which is a standard material used in the making of removable partial dentures. They are not as expensive as all the other partial dentures available.

Cast Metal Partial Denture

Unlike the flipper dentures, cast metal dentures comprise of metal frameworks. These dentures are attached to the teeth permanently. To fix these dentures, the surface of the natural teeth needs slight alteration so that they are fixed correctly. The metal clasps are not very visible. The cast metal partial denture is more advantageous when compared to the flipper type.

Flexible Framework Partial Denture

In this type of dentures, a nylon-like material replaces metal and the acrylic base. The nylon like material is colored pink similar to the color of the gums and is unbreakable. The clasps used to hold the denture is invisible as it rests on the gum and not the teeth.

The Cusil Partial Denture

It is a complete denture having holes in it so that rest of the natural teeth can protrude through. This type is usually used either when there is a poor distribution of natural teeth in the dental arch or when there is a possibility of losing natural teeth.
