What is Dental Trauma

Dental Trauma is any injury caused to the teeth. Nearly 30% children belonging to the age group of 3-5 years are prone to this problem. Mostly these children suffer from loosened, displaced, knocked out teeth. Some times fracture of the root and bone of the teeth also take place. This article tries to gain further insight on this dental problem.

Causes of Dental Trauma in Children:

  • Children belonging to the age group of 3-5 years, learn to walk and run in this age.
  • This process involves many falls and collisions.
  • By the time children get their permanent teeth, they enter school.
  • Boys generally are involved in sports accidents and fights in this age.
  • That is why, they are prone to dental trauma twice.
  • The teeth on the upper jaw and exposed in the front are two to three times more likely to get hurt.
  • It is because these teeth extend by 4mm more than the normally aligned teeth inside the mouth. These teeth are called Maxillary incisors technically.

Knowledge Gained from Research on Dental Trauma:

  • Researchers from the Department of Dental Medicine, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, University of Washington, Seattle, conducted a 3 years study on this topic on 487 children of the age group 3-5 years.
  • Their study confirmed the fact that young children get injured from falling in the house and older children get injured because of sport activities in school.
  • 80% of the children in the study were reported under emergency case of dental trauma.
  • Maxillary incisors injury was found to be 84% of the total injury cases in younger children.
  • It was found to be of 87% in school going older children’s case.
