Sore Tongue

Sore tongue is a common problem. Generally it does not cause any serious risks to health but it is advised to consult a doctor immediately in case of severity.


Causes of Sore Tongue

  • Disturbances in the normal bacterial presence in the mouth
  • Over growth of fungus in the mouth
  • Over use of antibiotics
  • Vitamin B complex deficiency
  • Geographic tongue(a tongue disorder)
  • black hairy tongue (a tongue disorder) may cause sore tongue
  • Oral ulcers
  • Tongue cancer
  • lichen planus
  • salivary disorders
  • Chemical irritation of the tongue
  • Minor infections of the tongue
  • Candida infection may cause a white or red irritated sore tongue
  • Food allergies
  • Hot or highly acidic drinks
  • Biting the tongue
  • Grinding the teeth (bruxism) may cause sore tongue in some people
  • Allergies to oral products such as mouthwashes and toothpastes
  • Poorly fitting dentures
  • Some medications
  • Diseases such as anaemia, crohn’s disease, coeliac disease, kidney disease and diabetes can cause sore tongue
  • Heavy smoking

Prevention of Sore Tongue

  • Drink a lot of water
  • Avoid very hot foods and acidic drinks
  • Avoid tea and coffee
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and chewing betel and cloves
    In case of severity; consult your doctor because the condition may be due to some other problems

Home Remedies for Sore Tongue

  • Mix half teaspoonful of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and drink. Do it twice a day.
  • Fry some alum, after frying it becomes swollen and dehydrated and the color of the alum changes to white. Powder it, mix it with honey and apply on the affected areas.
